    Each year in March the « mois de la Francophonie » is celebrated all over the world. In Sri Lanka, the High Commission of Canada, the Embassy of France, Vietnam, Switzerland, Romania, the Consulate of Tunisia, Wallonie-Bruxelles International, represented by the Consulate of Belgium, and the Alliance Française de Kotte in association with the National Film Corporation and Agenda 14 have come together to present the Festival Bonjour Cinéma! In 2016, Bonjour Cinéma! will be held from the 17th to the 20th of March in Colombo and from the 19th to the 20th in Kandy and take place under the Patronage of Internationally-renowned film maker Vimukhti Jayasundara. The Festival will present a collection of diversified movies produced in member countries of the International Organisation of “La Francophonie” (OIF), reflecting the diversity of the francophone world.       Well known actor, model and dancer Suraj Mapa presents ‘Elements with Surya’, a spectacular dance extravaganza with over fifty dancers at 10.00 am and 6.30 pm on Saturday 27 February at the Dharmaraja College Audotirium in Kandy. The two-hour show will bring together dancers representing various forms and styles, combined with the talent of film stars on one stage to present the choreography and dance of Suraj Mapa . This performance star Sri Lanka’s award-winning and popular actress Yashoda Wimaladharma in a special guest performance. “She will perform for the very first time in the cinema segment of this show and we’re very proud and honoured to have her on board”, Mapa said.   • World premiere of ‘An American in Paris’ at Paris’ Châtelet Theatre

It may sound unusual but Parisians and visitors to the French capital are in for a treat with the forthcoming production of An American in Paris which has been adapted from the screen to the stage and will enjoy its world première and opening run in one of Paris’ most prestigious cultural venues before hitting Broadway in 2015. From November 22nd until January 4th, the Théâtre de Châtelet will host Christopher Wheeldon’s theatrical adaption of the classic movie An American in Paris, itself inspired by George Gershwin’s symphonic poem. The show will then head to Broadway on April 12th for a 2015 season in New York. Set in recently liberated Paris, American World War II veteran Jerry Mulligan is eager to make a name for himself as a painter.

  • France confers National Honours on Mrs. Sumitra Peries

    On the 24th of November 2014, on behalf of the Government of France, the Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, His Excellency Mr Jean-Paul Monchau conferred onto Mrs. Sumitra Peries the title of ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ (Knight in the Order of Arts and Literature). The Order of ‘Arts et Lettres’ is a honorific distinction, created on the 2nd of May 1957 by the French Minister of Culture in order to recognise eminent artists, writers and scholars for their efforts in promoting the awareness and enrichment of cultural heritage in France and throughout the world. The decision to bestow this honour onto Mrs. Sumitra Peries was taken in recognition of her invaluable contribution as an author, a film director with an aesthetic sense and a recognized talent which testify for her love of freedom, her sensitivity and her gift for creation, not to
